Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month

1 in 4 people has a disability.

July is Disability Pride Month. This month is dedicated to celebrating the disabled community as well as amplifying their voices, accomplishments, and achievements.

Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July because the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26th, 1990. The ADA prohibits discrimination against the disabled community in all areas of public life including schools, transportation, jobs, and all public/private places open to the general public.

Unfortunately, ableism still exists despite laws in place to prevent discrimination, prejudice, and violence. Disability Pride Month is important to not only combat ableist issues but also celebrate the disabled community. Disability is a natural and beautiful part of diversity and disabled individuals deserve to be celebrated.

“Inclusion and representation should be a big deal all 365 days of the year too.”
